With the help of new bathymetric data, researchers were able to detect 332 submarine canyons near the Antarctic coast. Some of these structures were more than 4,000mts deep. Submarine canyons are instrumental in influencing geographical phenomena such as ocean currents. However, the research conducted on them is limited. Researchers also found differences between these structures in West and East Antarctica. They stressed the need to acquire data from areas of the ocean that still remain unmapped to gain more insights into these structures.

DID YOU KNOW?
Researchers have suggested the presence of many unidentified submarine structures as over two-thirds of the ocean floor is yet to be mapped in detail.
