An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Tamil Nadu named Supriya Sahu has been bestowed with the 2025 Champions of the Earth award for her exceptional efforts towards sustainability and environmental protection. The award is presented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) annually and Sahu was recognised in the Inspiration and Action category. Sahu has earned recognition for her innovative and dedicated contributions towards the preservation of wildlife, mangrove protection and combating plastic pollution. Among her notable endeavours was heading the ‘Cool Roof Project’ in Tamil Nadu, which involved using a special kind of paint that helps heat reflect off roofs. This technology enables cooling without damaging the environment and has the potential to help regions affected by severe heat sustainably.
