Indian Democracy

Atharva Agarwal, Class 5, One World International School, Bangalore

As you all know, in the olden days there used to be kings and queens. There used to be one family who would rule the kingdom. When the king/queen passes away or retires the son/daughter of them use to rule the kingdom in their replacement. This type of system was called Monarchy. People had no say in who would be the next king of the state. That is where a new system came that was called Democracy.
The US is the oldest modern democracy where we have a majorly two party system, namely Republican and Democrats. Similarly, Indian democracy is regarded as the largest democracy in the world. In India we have a multi-party system. Indian Democracy is regarded as the most diverse democracy.

Lets see some facts about Indian Democracy:

1. India is the largest democracy in the world by population. Over 950 million people were eligible to vote in the 2024 general elections.

2. There are over 1,600 distinct languages and dialects spoken across the country although the Indian constitution recognizes 22 official languages.

3. Currently in India there are 28 states and 8 union territories. Every five years we choose representatives for each state and as well as all India levels through elections.

In the end, India is a unique example of democracy and diversity. It brings some complexities for sure but this is the real strength of India that it has come out strongly despite being subjugated by various rulers throughout her history.
