The Pamban Rail Bridge, India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6. The construction of the bridge, which links Rameswaram Island and Mandapam in Tamil Nadu, involved an expense of `535 crore. The Pamban Rail Bridge features a span measuring 72.5mts in length that can be raised with the help of a vertical-lift system. This allows ships to move under the bridge. The bridge will facilitate smooth travel to Rameswaram, a popular pilgrimage centre, via rail. It is engineered to accommodate the electrification of railways in the future and can also endure the region’s severe marine environment. The bridge will be used by freight and semi-high-speed trains.
