Researchers recently found that humans inhabited Gujarat’s Kachchh around 5,000 years prior to the Harappans.
The study, undertaken by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, in partnership with researchers from other organisations, shed light on the adaptive ability of the early inhabitants.
Researchers believe these ancient people fed on species with shells such as oysters. They were hunter-gatherers and inhabited mangrove areas.
Researchers found piles of shells in Khadir and neighbouring islands. They initially believed these piles, called middens, were a natural feature and overlooked them. However, they are now believed to be remnants of the inhabitants’ activities.
