A survey carried out at Kerala’s Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary in January has unveiled a variety of new species, establishing the zone as an ecological treasure trove.

A survey carried out at Kerala’s Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary in January has unveiled a variety of new species, establishing the zone as an ecological treasure trove.
The survey, undertaken by Kerala’s forest department together with environmental groups, has provided crucial data on the fauna of the sanctuary, which spans 227.21 sq kms.
Researchers recorded 177 butterfly species, also studying the migration behaviour of some species. Furthermore, 42 odonata species, 171 bird species and numerous fish and spider species were documented.
The survey also included many species never recorded in the sanctuary before.
