Scientists have found that present-day koalas, known for being cute and mild, have evolved from ferocious creatures. Scientists discovered this through the study of a protein called collagen in the fossils of a huge creature called Thylacoleo carnifex that is now extinct. This creature, also called the marsupial lion, had strong, sharp teeth and claws and is believed to have been a fierce predator. This study reflects the surprising nature of evolutionary transformation with mild herbivores descending from mighty carnivores.

Koalas mainly feed on eucalyptus leaves. They can consume as much as 1kg of eucalyptus leaves each day.
