ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, an American artificial intelligence (AI) research company, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022. But what is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) that can provide users with information on a range of topics from history to current affairs and has applications across industries. ChatGPT can compose essays on difficult topics, compose original poems and jokes, generate cover letters, write code and answer any kind of question a user may have. The chatbot is trained on a huge collection of content from websites, posts on social media, articles and other information on the internet. It composes a single response that is best suited to the question asked by the user after skimming through loads of information on the internet. It can assist students with their homework, solve complex math problems, detect grammatical and spelling mistakes in assignments and answer complex questions, thus enhancing learning.

Though the chatbot is garnering praise for its ability to produce original material, it is also being criticised as it has the potential to be misused by users. Educators are concerned that students might become extremely dependent on ChatGPT, which will limit their ability to think and be creative.

Students may also cheat during quizzes to be answered at home. While some educators encourage the use of ChatGPT in education, many schools and colleges have decided to ban the chatbot from school and college networks. Another matter of concern is that ChatGPT does not always produce answers that are accurate and requires the user to prompt questions in a specific way. Additionally, it could be used to create extremely convincing phishing emails and produce malware, posing a big cyber security risk. There is also a fear that certain jobs may become obsolete and replaced by ChatGPT and other AI products.
