In a new study, researchers have found that tides played an important role in the development and progress of Sumer, a region in ancient Mesopotamia. Earlier, researchers believed that river irrigation contributed to the growth, development and trade in the Mesopotamian region. However, after conducting a new study involving the geography of the region, it was found that the movement of water due to tides in the Persian Gulf could have influenced the region’s environment and fertility. The study suggests that people carried out agriculture with the help of fresh water from rivers that was carried by these tides. Thus, rather than depending on complicated irrigation setups, people initially relied on the natural flow of water.
