Bikash Sinha, a noted nuclear physicist, passed away at the age of 78 on August 11 in Kolkata.

Bikash Sinha, a noted nuclear physicist, passed away at the age of 78 on August 11 in Kolkata. Sinha was known for his contributions to the field of Quark-gluon plasma in which he specialised. His other fields of specialisation included high energy physics and nuclear physics. He headed the Indian team that took part in experiments at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), one of the world’s largest scientific research centres, located in Geneva, Switzerland. During his career, he also served as the director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre in Kolkata. Sinha was honoured with various prestigious awards including the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, the Banga Bibhushan and the Rabindra Smriti Puraskar for his valuable contributions.
