The United States (US) government’s US Mint has stopped the manufacture of the penny, a coin with the value of one cent. According to government officials, manufacturing these coins wasn’t economical, as their manufacturing cost exceeded their actual worth. Hence, the US government finally brought an end to their manufacture after over 230 years, with the last batch being produced in November 2025. These coins will continue to circulate as currency. However, as new ones won’t be manufactured, a few shopkeepers are concerned that their shortage might lead to transaction problems.
