On May 8, Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA was elected Pope—the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. A group of 133 cardinals assembled in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City for the papal conclave to elect the new pope after Pope Francis’ passing. Prevost, born in Chicago, USA, is the first pope from the USA. He worked in Peru for many years and is also a citizen of the country. He has chosen the papal name ‘Leo’, believed to have drawn inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, who was recognised for his efforts on social issues. He is called Pope Leo XIV and is expected to work towards social justice while guiding 1.4 billion Catholics globally.
