The 73-year-old replaced Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had to resign from the post because of citizen protests against the government due to the country’s economic crisis. Wickremesinghe is from the United National Party (UNP) and is the nephew of the former president, Junius Jayewardene. Wickremesinghe joined the Sri Lankan parliament at the age of 28 in 1977.
