Scientists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have developed a four-wheeled robot that uses the antennae of locusts to detect different odours. Locusts have a very sharp sense of smell. In the experiment, the antennae of locusts were positioned between two electrodes on the robot and once a scent was detected, electric signals were sent to the robot, which identified the scent using machine learning. According to the scientists, this technology could be used to ensure food safety, detect explosives and also help in the diagnosis of diseases.

Locust swarms consist of millions of locusts and can travel over 100kms a day.
