An Emirati woman named Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has shattered the glass ceiling with her appointment as the secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). This appointment makes Al Nowais the first person from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the first female to hold this position since its establishment. She is set to head the organisation for four years starting from January 2026, focussing on various areas including developing the tourism sector with the help of technology and ensuring that cultural and natural tourism sites are conserved. Al Nowais has worked in the hospitality sector and served as the chairwoman of the Tourism Working Group of the Abu Dhabi Chamber.
