The field director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, Sonali Ghosh created history by becoming the first Indian to be honoured with the Kenton R Miller Award. Bestowed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), this esteemed award commends the efforts of people who safeguard, manage and devise novel approaches to care for national parks. Ghosh achieved a historic milestone by being named as Kaziranga National Park’s first female field director in 2023. She has worked towards improving wildlife protection, enhancing the park’s operations and involving locals in conservation efforts. Ghosh, an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, has also worked at Orang National Park (better known as mini Kaziranga) and Manas National Park in Assam.
