Subject of My Choice

International Students’ Day is observed annually in November to promote educational opportunities and encourage students to advocate for their rights. Education provides a strong foundation for a student’s life and encourages them to build skills, develop opinions, stand up for what they believe in and share their unique ideas. To mark International Students’ Day, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers which new subject they would add to the school curriculum if given the chance. Here’s what they had to say.

I would like to include a subject called Life Beyond Books in the curriculum. The subject would educate students on mental health, emotional intelligence, interpersonal and financial skills. Sessions would include activities that would help students make wise decisions, express their opinions and tackle problems in the real world. Students would learn these skills through practical activities such as saving money and planning budgets, problem-solving sessions and organising events. Education shouldn’t just be focussed on tests and exams, but also help us prepare for the journey of life. Life Beyond Books would be designed to introduce hands-on activities that would make learning meaningful and engaging.

A subject I would like to see as part of the curriculum is cooking. Cooking doesn’t just involve preparing food; it also helps us understand estimation and nutrition. It improves our patience and encourages creativity. Trying new recipes helps us experiment and even improve our mistakes. The subject will improve our knowledge of the science behind cooking. It will teach us about the effect of heat on food items and how different ingredients blend and interact with each other to create the right taste. By learning to cook, we can also help at home. It is an activity that helps family members unite. Moreover, it is an essential skill that will be useful throughout life.

I would like psychology to be a part of my school curriculum. By studying psychology, we would understand ourselves better. The subject would help us understand our own thinking patterns and processes, our behaviours and habits, and what motivates us. It would also help us communicate better and pick up non-verbal signals reflected by a person’s expressions and actions. Learning psychology would help us become more empathetic, enhancing our personal relationships and social interactions. As students would understand one another, they would support each other, creating an inclusive and caring environment in school. The subject would also help us develop healthy mental habits, deal with stress and manage our feelings.

I find astronomy exciting and thus would like to introduce a subject called Secrets of Space. Doesn’t everyone find the mysteries of space and astronaut missions amazing? Through astronomy, we would learn about space, galaxies, stars, the Solar System, asteroids, black holes and even supernovas! The secrets of space cultivate curiosity in us and studying the subject would strengthen our interest. Astronomy helps us understand the connection between humans and celestial bodies. It is an ancient field that provides rich and interesting
information.

I would like a creative subject like Lego to be introduced in the curriculum, as this subject would help us de-stress. Additionally, it would help us become imaginative and prepare for careers like architecture. Another feature I would like in the school curriculum is having an environment like KidZania, where children get to explore different careers and try activities that adults engage in, such as driving cars and managing money. This would prepare us for tasks in the real world. Besides this, I think we could also have a subject that encourages us to be empathetic and serve people in our community. For example, we could educate older people on technology and teach them how to operate their phones and carry out other complex tasks.

I would like a subject called Engaging with Nature to be part of the curriculum. Nature walks, visits to wildlife parks and tree plantation activities would be part of this subject. The subject would involve connecting with nature by engaging in such activities at least once a week. Visiting gardens and open spaces would give us a break from our books and help us immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. This would help us refresh our minds. By spending time in nature, people learn important lessons. For example, birds build different types of nests and work hard to do so, teaching us the value of creativity and hard work. Mountains stand tall despite strong winds and the harsh climate, teaching us the importance of patience and resilience. Additionally, the wind keeps moving forward with determination, teaching us the importance of focussing on our goals. Developing a strong relationship with nature as children would help us make environmentally responsible decisions as adults.

REFLECTION: More Than Just Books

If you could change something about the education system in schools, what would it be?
