Perumal Murugan, a Tamil writer, was awarded the JCB Prize for Literature 2023 for his book, ‘Fire Bird’.

Perumal Murugan, a Tamil writer, was awarded the JCB Prize for Literature 2023 for his book, ‘Fire Bird’. The book was originally written in Tamil and was titled ‘Aalanda Patchi’; it was translated to English by Janani Kannan. ‘Fire Bird’ is about a family that migrates to a new place and the challenges faced by the family members. It describes the human desire for permanence in a world that is constantly changing. The JCB Prize for Literature is awarded to Indian writers for their work in the fiction genre by the JCB Literature Foundation. Murugan’s novel ‘Pyre’, which is about the caste system, was longlisted for the International Booker Prize 2023. He has written several novels, poems and short stories.
