The Girl Who Was a Forest: Janaki Ammal by Lavanya Karthik

Illustrated By: Lavanya Karthik | Published By: Duckbill Books | Recommended Age: 5+ years

Written and Illustrated By: Lavanya Karthik

This book is inspired by the real-life story of Janaki Ammal, a young girl who lived in Thalassery in Kerala. All her life, she was forced to live by others’ rules until she discovered a secret world, a world her father helped her discover. In the book, Janaki’s father tells her that she is a seed and that every seed is capable of creating a forest—a forest of dreams, ideas and possibilities. And nothing can stop a forest from growing, not even rules. And just like that, Janaki’s father pulls her out of the rut of what everyone else believed was their destiny and made her stand up on her own two feet and think differently. The illustrations in the book are brilliant and will spur the artist in every reader. This is a great book for young minds.
