The Refrigerator

Om Mandloi. Class 9, Dhirubai Ambani International School, Mumbai

In the hush of midnight’s hum
I crawl inside the silver coffin
fingers grazing frost bitten dreams
each breath turning to crystal prayers
Here the world slows
Outside noise hunger humanity
but within this glacial womb
silence reigns sovereign
The milk stares with blind eyes
bread stiff with yesterday’s sighs
a jar of jam gleams red
like blood I’ve learned to freeze
I sit among the ghosts of dinners
their laughter embalmed in ice
their memories sealed in Tupperware
unspoiled untouched undying
For once I do not need to be warm
Warmth belongs to the living
to the restless to the breaking hearts
that pulse too loud against the ribs of time
In here I am still
The hum of the motor my lullaby
the frost my crown of quiet rebellion
Isolation tastes clean
And if they find me one dawn
lips blue eyes calm
let them know I wasn’t hiding
I was home
in the chill of a world that finally
didn’t burn
