Researchers have found a rare metal called vanadium in samples of sediments from the Gulf of Khambhat near Alang in Gujarat. The samples were collected by officials of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and according to them, this is the first occurrence of the metal in India’s offshore sediments. The production of vanadium is expensive as the element is very rarely found in its pure state. Vanadium is an important raw material used in the production of batteries. The metal is also used to make alloys for components of vehicles in the aerospace and defence industry.
