Ways and Thoughts of Study: Learning Beyond Books

Rishaan Das, Class 6, Deens Academy, Bengaluru

Education plays an important role in shaping our lives. It gives us knowledge, helps us think better, and prepares us for the future. As a student in grade 6, I feel happy to learn new things every day. At the same time, I also notice that learning is not always easy or exciting. There are many ways in which studies can become more interesting and practical. I want to share my honest thoughts on how teaching and learning feel to me, what difficulties I face and how things can improve for children like me.

The Concern: Learning Feels Bookish and Boring
Studying is important, but sometimes the way lessons are taught makes them feel heavy. Teachers are kind and helpful, but many times lessons are explained only from books. When learning depends only on memorizing, it feels like “mugging up” without real understanding. Reading long paragraphs and writing notes again and again does not always make the concepts clear. This kind of learning makes the classroom quiet, serious and even boring.
I believe learning becomes more meaningful when we can see things with our eyes. Visuals, pictures, models and even small videos help us imagine better. For example, reading about volcanoes is one thing, but watching an experiment or video of how lava erupts makes the idea much clearer. Without such methods, studies look like plain text.

The Need for Visual and Practical Learning:
Learning becomes powerful when we can “see and do.” Books explain concepts, but our mind understands faster when there are images, diagrams or practical demonstrations. For instance, looking at an encyclopedia picture of the solar system explains planets much better than a full page of text. Even in classrooms, posters, charts and digital boards can bring subjects to life.
Subjects like Social Science, Biology and Chemistry are naturally full of stories, experiments and discoveries. If explained in a practical way, they can be fun instead of being hard. In Biology, understanding the human heart is easier with a 3D model than with a paragraph. In Chemistry, simple experiments with colours and reactions make the topic exciting. When we see and do, we learn and understand faster.

Examples From Daily Life:
Let me share some experiences. Once, I was learning about weighing machines. The book said there are two plates—one for the item and another for the weight. I understood the concept but when I went to the shop, I could not find such machines. Most shopkeepers used electronic machines. The book showed an old system, while reality had already changed. This created confusion in my mind.

Another time, I wanted to understand money through practical use. I went to a shop to buy something and tried to practice addition and subtraction with cash. But almost everyone was paying with phones. I hardly saw cash being used. Again, what I read in the book was not what I saw in real life. These experiences made me think—if technology in our society is moving so fast, why do books remain old? Why not update books to match what we see daily?

The Problem of Memorization:
One of the hardest parts of school learning is memorization. Mugging up lessons without real understanding feels like carrying weight in the mind. For exams, we try to remember lines word by word, but after the exam, much of it is forgotten. This does not give lasting knowledge.
Learning should feel like bringing ideas, not just memorizing. For example, if a child understands how water evaporates, they can explain it in their own words. But if the same child memorizes a textbook definition without grasping the meaning, the knowledge disappears quickly. The present system often measures how much we remember, not how much we understand.
