What Is BRICS?

BRICS is a group of countries that work together to help each other grow and have a stronger voice in the world. The group was formed in 2009 to cooperate on trade, economy and global issues. It originally included Brazil, Russia, India and China; South Africa joined a year later. The name BRICS was derived by using the first letters of the names of the countries.

Which countries are in BRICS today?Over time, BRICS has expanded and the term BRICS+ is now used. As of 2025, it also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia in addition to the original five countries.
