Women We Look Up To

Women have made remarkable contributions across fields such as healthcare, technology, education, sports and politics, balancing responsibilities at home and in the wider world. International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on March 8, celebrates women’s achievements and highlights their rights. To mark the occasion, SCARLETT RODRIGUES spoke to a few RobinAgers about the women they admire and why they inspire them.

I have always dreamt of clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam. I’m aware that clearing the exam requires clarity, determination and hard work, considering how challenging it is. Chandana, a friend of my mother, has served as my inspiration, encouraging me to pursue this dream. She is the only person I know personally to have cleared the exam. Her outstanding accomplishment has fuelled my ambition, reminding me that nothing is unachievable. It serves as a powerful example of how women are on par with men, and often even more ambitious, skilled and dedicated.

My class teacher, Preetha Akka, is my inspiration. She is loving, patient and very approachable. She is also creative and can turn the most boring lessons into fun experiences. She treats every student equally and makes everyone feel special. She teaches us English and whenever I share my pieces of writing with her, she provides me with valuable tips to improve my skills. Whenever we face difficulties, we approach her without hesitation. She is more like a friend than a teacher to us.

The woman I admire the most is my mother. She is beautiful and independent and always encourages me to follow my dreams. Despite facing setbacks, she is always determined to move forward. She fulfils her responsibilities delightfully. People often tell me that I resemble my mother and that I sound like her as well. I’m grateful to have her as my role model. Another person I admire is my grandmother. Though she passed away before I was born, I have heard about her through stories from my father and other family members. She was religious and disciplined. She also imparted strong values that have been passed down to our generation and stick with us even today.

I admire my grandmother the most. She has played a significant role in shaping my life through her interesting stories, life lessons and warm aura. Though she sometimes faces physical difficulties, she maintains an optimistic attitude. This inspires me to overcome my own challenges courageously. Once, when I had a disagreement with a friend, my grandmother taught me the importance of apologising and mending my friendship. She always celebrates my achievements and her contagious smile brings joy to everyone. I affectionately call her ‘Phool’, meaning flower.

A woman who guides and inspires me the most is my mother. She is a modern-day working woman who carries out her duties both at home and in the office efficiently and passionately. She is kind and helpful and does her best to make our lives comfortable. Apart from academics, my mother encourages me to pursue co-curricular activities such as reading and cricket. My mother is a principal engineer in a software company and she is excellent at coding. I aspire to be as good a coder as she is and excel in the future. Through my mother’s example, I have understood that attaining success requires hard work, determination and kindness towards others.

The women I value the most are my mother and elder sister. My mother buys me whatever I want. She is an excellent cook and I enjoy all the chicken dishes she prepares. My mother showers me with love and also corrects me when I make mistakes. She encourages me to pursue my hobbies and accompanies me to cricket and other classes. I look up to my sister as a role model, too. If I lose my things, my sister shares her things with me. She helps me with my homework and takes care of me when my parents are not at home. Whenever she buys snacks for herself, she gets some for me too. My sister is good at academics and I wish to follow in her footsteps.
