A state assemblyman of Indian origin named Zohran Mamdani is among the candidates competing in the New York mayoral elections. Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, is the first Muslim candidate in the running for the position of New York City’s mayor. The 33-year-old became part of the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017. Mamdani was born in Uganda and later moved to New York, USA, along with his family. He has represented the 36th District in Queens in the New York State Assembly since 2021. He is the son of popular Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair. The general election for mayor is set to take place in November.
