The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the advisory body to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Centre, has recommended that Santiniketan in West Bengal be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visva-Bharati, which means ‘the communion of the world with India’, is an educational institution built by Rabindranath Tagore in the twin towns of Sriniketan and Santiniketan over a century ago. The inclusion will boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of exhibiting India’s unique cultural heritage to the world.
