Beyond the Horizon

Ovi Mhaisekar, Class 6, The Orchid School, Baner, Maharashtra

Violet shifted the curtains. It was almost time. Time for decision day. Of course, no one ever wanted to leave the wretched island. They were all too stuck up in their own worlds. What might the fated day be, you ask? Well, Violet lived, with her brother on an island (a very small island, mind you) whose only inhabitants were The Raddhons. The Raddhons were a small community of a hundred ppl, who thought that being alive was the greatest opportunity. For Violet, they were just naïve and dumb. Violet glanced out at the horizon, the heavy weight of the decision pressing down on her. The Raddhons, with their narrow-minded views, were a source of constant frustration. They prided themselves on how their island, isolated from the rest of the world, was a sanctuary. To Violet, though, it felt like a prison. They were wrapped up in their daily routines, blind to the possibilities outside the little bubble they had created for themselves. Every conversation felt like a repetition of the same tired philosophies: “Being alive is a gift,” “We must protect the island and its ways,” and so on. Violet had heard it all before. The idea of making a decision—something beyond the mundane, something that could change everything-was as foreign to them as the idea of leaving the island.
Violet knew the fateful day was nearing. The day when they would either choose to remain with the Raddhons or to leave. The thought of staying behind, being trapped on this island with people who would never understand the need for something more, was unbearable. Her own brother, actually liked it here.
It wasn’t just the island that was too small; it was the lives the Raddhons led. To Violet, there had to be more than just existing. The world beyond the island—whatever it was—was calling.
