One wintry afternoon, I was walking back home from the bus stop where my school bus used to drop me off. This story dates to November 30, 2019, when I used to be a student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir. It was a chilly afternoon and while coming back home I had this little adventure.
I had just reached the gate of my house when my sight fell on the other side of the lane beside the drain. A female dog was whimpering while looking down into the drain. This piqued my curiosity, and I edged closer to her. I looked down and saw that four of her puppies were down in the drain, shivering from the cold and unable to climb up themselves.
I bent down to pick them up when my mom shouted from behind me, “No child!! Don’t pick them up. It will ruin your uniform. Somebody else will help them. Come back.” I looked back at my mom and said, “Mother, this dog is also a mother to four puppies. What if it was me in place of them? Look at the way she is whimpering and looking up at me expectantly. She knows that I am going to help her, and I will help her. It won’t harm us if I help another being.”
Saying so, I sat down on my haunches and picked up the puppies one by one. Then I patted the entire family and went back to my mom.
“A job well down. I am proud of you,” she said. She had been watching the entire scene from a distance. I said nothing and smiled. It was a happy and content smile knowing that I had made that mother dog’s day.
