In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Lincoln, UK, it was discovered that red-footed tortoises can experience emotions such as pessimism and optimism. The study showed that tortoises’ long-term mood was influenced by their environment. Tortoises exposed to nurturing surroundings were observed to display optimism. Researchers also studied the tortoises’ behaviour by introducing them to new situations and environments that could provoke anxiety and stress. They found that tortoises displaying optimism showed less anxiety in these settings.
