A 17-year-old homeschooler named Hannah Cairo surprised mathematicians by showing that the Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture, a theory that mathematicians had found challenging for years, was incorrect. Cairo, who was raised in the Bahamas, was passionate about mathematics since childhood. As she was homeschooled, she learnt various math topics with the help of online resources and books. Cairo began taking classes through the University of California, Berkeley’s concurrent enrolment programme and came across the Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture through a professor. She worked on the theory with determination and came up with a counterexample. Her abilities have helped her acquire a spot in a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) programme.
