Scientists at the University of California, Davis, USA, are studying the golden apple snail, a creature that can regenerate its eyes, in order to help humans who have hurt or damaged their eyes. According to scientists, the eyes of the golden apple snail can regenerate with parts such as the optic nerve. The eyes of this creature possess genetic characteristics similar to those of humans. Using new techniques, scientists found that genes such as PAX6, which exist in humans, also serve a vital function in the development of the snail’s eyes. Scientists are carrying out further studies to understand how editing these genes could potentially help in restoring vision in humans.
