Celebrating Girls

The United Nations (UN) has designated October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child. The day is celebrated annually to highlight the challenges girls encounter in society and to build a world where they can excel. This observance reminds people of the need to eliminate injustices against girls, nurture their dreams and safeguard their rights. To mark this occasion, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers about their future aspirations and how India can evolve to support them. Here’s what they had to say.

Girls had limited freedom in the past. They were denied basic rights, such as education, and their opinions were ignored. They were confined to their houses and burdened with domestic responsibilities. Yet, some brave women shattered these restrictions and paved the way for a brighter future for girls. Today, girls are chasing their dreams confidently. They are proving their capabilities in schools, colleges, universities and even in the corporate world. They are also excelling in different fields, from science to sports. I aspire to be an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and serve India dedicatedly and justly. I want to be a voice for the weak and improve society. I dream of a world where every girl feels confident and valued. India can continue to support girls by making quality education available to every girl and giving girls fair chances to grow.

I aspire to be one of the best Indian architects. I wish to create structures with modern features that also reflect the cultural and architectural heritage of India. India has mentors, experts in the field of architecture, top architecture colleges and a rich history of design that interests and encourages students like me. India also has various competitions, platforms and scholarships that encourage young students to showcase their talents and creativity. India can further help girls to pursue their dreams by ensuring safe learning environments, encouraging them to join technical fields and providing them with more opportunities. This support, motivation and resources will help India produce architects who make a mark globally.

When I grow up, I want to be a heart surgeon. I wish to serve people and make healthcare facilities available to everyone, especially the poor. I think the government should work towards making more internship opportunities available in the medicine and healthcare field, especially for girls, and provide them with a stipend. The government can also create a quota for girls in medical colleges, especially in rural areas, to motivate girls to join the field. This will improve healthcare facilities in villages. The government should also introduce fee concessions for deserving girls pursuing different courses. With girls leading in all fields, society will understand what a pride they are!

I wish to be an author because I love reading, have a good command of the English language and like expressing my ideas through words. I aspire to win the Booker Prize one day. I think India needs more female authors. The government can nurture the creativity of young girls through scholarships and other programmes. Schools can help girls to improve their skills and encourage them to express their opinions and take part in creative writing competitions. The government can set up more free libraries with fun activities to attract children and support reading.

I dream of becoming a teacher when I grow up because I want to share knowledge and guide children like my teachers guide me. Teachers shape the minds of young children and help them build a better future. I imagine myself standing in a classroom where every child feels confident and inspired to learn. To reach this dream, I need a good education, support and encouragement from my family and society. If India continues to give equal opportunities to girls, we can follow our aspirations without fear. One day, I hope to not only fulfil my dream, but also inspire other girls to believe in theirs.

I wish to be a singer in the future and inspire people through music. I dream of an India where girls can dream big, express their views and thoughts freely and excel in different fields, including politics, sports, science and technology. I dream of a country where girls, especially those in rural areas, can have big aspirations and acquire an education without being judged by society. There should be more programmes like ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and greater awareness spread about them to empower girls across India. Religion, caste and gender should not be the basis of discrimination. Girls can play a significant role in leading India towards a brighter future.
