Researchers at ETH Zurich and Eawag, Switzerland, conducted a study to explore how trees cool urban areas. On studying the effects of trees in different urban areas of Zurich, they found that moist soil surrounding trees plays an important role in enabling the trees to keep the air nearby cool. Additionally, the evaporation of water from the ground also contributes to decreased air temperature. Researchers further found that though trees are grown in congested urban zones, they have less cooling power. Hence, along with soil moisture, trees require adequate space to enable efficient cooling.
