  • Research spearheaded by Nagaland University has discovered that salts of lanthanide (a rare earth element) could help stop corrosion of metals in a sustainable manner.
  • Corrosion is the decomposing of metals when they come in contact with elements in the environment, such as water and air. Corrosion of metals in industries can decrease the efficiency of operations, pose significant dangers and lead to ecological setbacks.
  • Substances such as nitrates and chromates are traditionally used to control corrosion; however, they are toxic.
  • According to researchers, lanthanide salts, which are inorganic compounds, can replace these toxic substances, offering eco-friendly resistance to corrosion.
