Scientists have developed a passive cooling system that operates without electricity, by making use of radiation and evaporation. This system could resemble a solar panel and combines cooling technologies such as radioactive cooling, evaporative cooling and thermal insulation to produce more cooling on the whole as compared to individual cooling designs.

The device operates with the help of just a small amount of water and has the ability to provide cooling of around 9.3˚C. According to scientists, this passive cooling system could supplement air conditioners used in buildings and could also be used to reduce food loss caused due to spoilage.

Each year, around 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted.
