Indian chess player Karthikeyan Murali defeated Magnus Carlsen in classical chess during the Qatar Masters 2023 tournament in October, making him the third Indian to emerge victorious over the Norwegian player. Murali defeated Carlsen, who is ranked world number one, in the tournament’s seventh round. Viswanathan Anand and Pentala Harikrishna are the only two other Indians who have beaten Carlsen in the past. Murali belongs to Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. He is a two-time national champion and earned the title of Grandmaster in 2015.
