Ethiopia has inaugurated an enormous dam called the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) that is expected to significantly boost energy production in the country. The dam is the largest source of hydropower in Africa and is constructed on the Blue Nile, a tributary of the Nile. With a capacity of over 5,000 megawatts of electricity, it is expected to improve Ethiopia’s electricity supply and also enable the country to export power to neighbouring regions. However, Egypt and Sudan are troubled that the dam might affect the water supply of the Nile, which is vital for both countries.
