Hertz, a German shorthaired pointer dog, has been awarded a special medal for bravery. He is a recipient of the PDSA Dickin Medal, which is the animal version of the Victoria Cross—the highest award a person serving in the British armed forces can receive. Hertz received this award for protecting British troops in Afghanistan while serving with the Royal Air Force (RAF) Police. He is the first dog in British military history to be trained by the RAF to find electronic communications equipment. Hertz was part of an operation in Afghanistan where he was responsible for finding more than 100 dangerous items, which could have been a threat to the lives of the people there.
