To recognise the Pythagoras theorem’s origin, the theorem has been included in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) mathematics textbook of class 8 as the ‘Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem’. This move aims to underscore the history of the theorem, which is believed to have been formulated by the Indian mathematician Baudhayana. According to experts, Baudhayana lived approximately 200 years before Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who is popularly associated with the theorem. The change hopes to familiarise students with India’s mathematical heritage.
