According to a United Nations-backed expert panel, the Earth’s ozone layer is on course to full recovery within the next 40 years as a result of the global phaseout of approximately 99% of chemicals that caused the depletion of the ozone layer. According to the panel, the ozone layer should recover to 1980 levels by 2045 in the Arctic, 2066 in the Antarctic and 2040 in other places of the world if current policies to protect it remain in place. Scientists attribute this success to the Montreal Protocol, which is a global agreement to protect the ozone layer.
