For the first time ever, Solenopsis invicta or red fire ants have been discovered in Europe. Around 88 nests of the species were found in Sicily, Italy. These ants have a powerful sting and can form super colonies very rapidly. This species is one of the most invasive species in the world and is known to pose a threat to plants and other creatures including lizards, frogs and birds. It is native to South America but has spread to other countries including Mexico, China and the USA through goods and cargo. Scientists believe that global warming has made Europe’s environment suitable for the ant species and their colonies are likely to spread to other countries in Europe too.

Did You Know?
On average, there can be 2,00,000 red fire ants in each colony.
