Sloths, known for their slow movement, existed in a variety of sizes in ancient times, with some species reaching a height of 20ft. To understand what influenced the size of these creatures, scientists traced their history over 35 million years. Scientists discovered that sloths’ size was mostly affected by their habitat—on treetops or on the ground. They believe that sloths initially lived on land and were huge. However, with the expansion of forests, they evolved to be smaller and live on trees.
