Summer’s First Rain

Dhrithi Chembarpu, Class 7, Dev-In National School, Benagluru

I was sitting in the veranda,
Reading Malgudi Days,
Absorbed in the world of an imaginary town.
Suddenly, I felt a breeze
Caressing my cheeks,
Which soon turned violent,
Blowing leaves and branches around.
It pulled me out of my book,
And made me look up to see,
The wind howling and blowing hard,
Bringing clouds from far away.
The sun hid behind the clouds,
Making the world seem dark and dreary.
Birds flew back to their nests,
Twittering all the way.
The rain came, just drizzling at first,
But it soon turned into a heavy downpour.
Falling onto the parched ground,
And quenching the trees’ thirst.
The trees and plants danced in the rain,
And I joined them with my umbrella.
Allowing its beauty to hold me prisoner,
And enjoying myself as I had not done in days.
