Om Mandloi, Class 9, Dhirubai Ambani International School, Mumbai
It begins bright and curved
a crescent moon in daylight
its yellow skin laughing against the sun
but time writes its quiet script
soft brown constellations
spreading across the surface like forgotten bruises
It is a fruit of sadness
its sweetness strongest when it is closest to decay
it teaches that love
like ripeness
is fleeting and cannot be preserved
without rotting
To peel it is to undress memory
layer by layer
until what is tender is revealed
until what is soft is surrendered
and once it is opened
it cannot return to its innocence
The banana bends under its own weight
not in weakness but in knowing
that everything leans towards an ending
its curve is a sigh
a bowed spine under the heaviness of time
And yet
in the loneliness of its fading skin
there is love
for even as it darkens
it offers its sweetness to the world
a final gesture of giving
a reminder that even in sadness
life can taste of gentleness
