In order to reduce the use of fossil fuels, various sources of renewable energy are being explored. One of them is geothermal energy, which is created using the heat that is generated deep inside the Earth. Recently, the United States Department of Energy asked researchers to find ways to use oil wells that are already drilled to create geothermal energy.

Scientists from the University of Oklahoma have started to use old unused oil wells to provide heat energy to the elementary and middle schools in a town called Tuttle, Oklahoma. A company called Transitional Energy in Nevada is planning to work with active oil wells. Since the wells are already bringing up hot water while filtering oil, the scientists are hoping to use the heat in the water to create electricity.

Did You Know?
The word ‘geothermal’ comes from two Greek words, ‘geo’, which means ‘earth’, and ‘therme’, which means ‘heat’.
