A volcano located in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia that was dormant for several millennia erupted unexpectedly in November, surprising scientists. The volcano, called Hayli Gubbi, is believed to have become active after around 12,000 years and scientists are studying it to find out what led to its sudden eruption. The volcano resulted in ash emissions reaching a height of approximately 14kms, affecting surrounding regions. Its effects were also seen in other countries including India, Yemen, Pakistan and Oman. This phenomenon highlights the need to explore the region’s geological activity in greater depth.
