What you need to do to build a career as a genetic engineer.

A genetic engineer is a science professional who artificially alters the genetic material of plants, animals or humans to enhance their biological characteristics. Genetic engineers work at developing disease-resistant plants, new animal species and new medicines and carry out a lot of research.

To be a genetic engineer one must complete:

  • Class 12 in science
  • 3-year bachelor’s degree in science (BSc) with genetics or genetic engineering
  • 2-year master’s degree in science (MSc) with genetics or genetic engineering
  • PhD in genetic engineering (optional)

Career Options: Research and development company, government institution, pharmaceutical company, healthcare firm, genetic engineering firm or agricultural firm.
Job Roles: Genetic engineer, research scientist, laboratory manager, genome engineering scientist or professor.
