Computer modelling based on information from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft has helped scientists discover shaded places within pits on the moon that have a temperature of 17°C, warm enough for humans. According to scientists, these pits and caves will aid lunar exploration as the outside temperature on the moon reaches 127°C during the day and -173°C during the night.

Scientists believe that a few of these pits are collapsed lava tubes. These spaces could also protect humans from micrometeorites and dangerous outer space radiation.
