What you need to do to build a career as an astronomer.

Astronomers are scientists who study stars, planets and other astronomical objects in the universe. Astronomers engage in research in order to understand the universe and make discoveries.

To be an astronomer one must complete:

  • Class 12 in science.
  • 3-year bachelor’s degree in physics with a specialisation in astronomy and astrophysics (BSc in physics).
  • 2-year master’s degree in astronomy or physics with a specialisation in astronomy and astrophysics (MSc in astronomy or MSc in physics).
  • PhD in astronomy and astrophysics.

Career Options: An astronomer can work in a government organisation, astronomical observatory, research company or university.
Job Roles: Observational astronomer, theoretical astronomer, space scientist, research astrophysicist, scientific assistant and professor.
